Lessons on Love Blog Tour

Hi, Linda! Thank you so much for having me on your blog! I am so excited to share my brand new novella with your readers. It is part of the Lessons on Love schoolteacher historical romance collection by Barbour which just released this week Oct 1.

unnamed

I had a lot of fun researching for my novella “Something Old, Something New” to recreate an early 19th century New York village along the Hudson River within a day’s travel to New York City. Westchester County is a large and wealthy county which earned that distinction early in its history. By 1840 the Erie Canal had been operational for several years, only increasing commerce up the Hudson to the waterway that would link east to west. The land was rich in timber and natural resources. Its natural sylvan beauty inspired an art movement—the Hudson River School of Art, and the American literary classics of novelist Washington Irving.

Into this setting, I dropped a culture of Old Dutch Reform catechism, and a thriving community of Jewish scholars, artisans, and professionals. These diverse backgrounds provide chemistry aplenty between the hero and heroine. Joshua Blake is the nephew of the town mayor, and though he comes from the traditions of the hardworking and practical Dutch, he brings the influence of New York revivalist Charles Finney, his mentor. Joshua represents the new, bringing fresh thought, fresh ambitions and fresh energy to a village set in its ways. Golda Jacobs represents something old, the traditions of her family, her scholarly upbringing, and the Torah.

The story opens up as Golda mourns the loss of her father, the beloved community schoolmaster, on a prescribed day of mourning which happens to coincide with a high Jewish Holy Day, Yom Kippur. Prior to this, the Jewish calendar begins the New Year on Rosh Hashana and the time between the two is known as the Ten Days of Awe, a time of introspection and self-evaluation in preparation for The Day of Atonement. It is ten days wherein a believer can repent and change their destiny for the new year, but on Yom Kippur, the books are closed and one’s fate is sealed.

It is on this fateful day that Golda meets Joshua, and their course is set—their academic course, as well as their destiny. The mayor wants his nephew to teach, but Golda isn’t ready to relinquish her father’s desk and curriculum. Sparks will fly, igniting a fire that will reach the whole community. Can love, cooperation, and common ground allow new and old to coincide and even thrive?

My Thoughts on this book…

A Widow’s Hope is a sweet and touching story of a young widow and her handicapped son and also a story about a young man who bears his own scars of his parent’s death. Though these two know each other from their past, they hardly thought they would see each other again. Will pain keep them from finding love? or will all the hurt from the past keep them apart?

I really liked the characters in this story, especially Hannah’s mother who seems to have some wisdom about things and is looking out for what is best for Hannah. Being a mom I can relate to her and her wanting to see her daughter not grieving for too long over the death of her husband. Also for her and her husbands love for Hannah and her son who now live with them.

This story touched my heart as I was/am grieving the loss of two of the most spiritual men in my life. Grief is not always hard to go through and letting go of the past and forging a new future is hard. Doing it with children seems even harder, though they are more resilient and more accepting of new things at times.

I believe anyone who is dealing with loss, grief or who deals with a disability would really grow from reading this story. It is a book for everyone in the family to enjoy! Vannetta as always brings us a heartwarming story for all ages. You won’t be disappointed by this first book in her Amish Brides series.

Carole P. Roman books and collections review

29391463_10156243094363147_687745866_o.jpg

Since the children and I have been studying History, we were very excited to be chosen to review three of Carole P. Roman‘s books! We were asked to chose three that we thought we would really enjoy, we chose these books from Carole P. Roman books and collectionsIf You Were Me and Lived in Colonial AmericaIf You Were Me and Lived in The American West, and If You Were Me and Lived in Elizabethan England .

Our Review

We hope you enjoy our little video we made to share the books we read !

These are not just some small reading books for little ones. These are books filled with a whole lot of information on each time period.  They could be read to younger children ages 4 to 8 , but they make excellent books for  advanced readers ages 9 to 15 year old.

29497256_10156232866808147_2160296858293895168_o.jpg

In If you were me and lived in Colonial America, you will learn about Puritans and Separatists, their differences and why they wanted to come to the new land. Learning about this and how government was set up in Colonial America, helped the children to see that rules were meant to help us live more peaceable lives and ensure everyone’s safety and survival.  Reading about how their homes were built, what they ate and how they lived actually made the kids see that , they themselves have life really easy today.

29432468_10156232869508147_2494329581733937152_n.jpg

In If you were me and Lived in the American West , You will learn things like what kind of food you might eat on the Oregon Trail, the clothes you would wear in the American West, what your name  might have been in the 19th century, and what children did for fun once their many chores were done.  I think this gave the children a view into the time period from a child’s point of view.  For us that was important as they viewed History as mundane and reading this gave them more understanding and made them realize that History is anything but boring !

29467835_10156232870168147_6751057104565436416_o.jpg

In if you were me and Lived in Elizabethan England, We learned about the differences between living there today and living there over 400 years ago. What folks ate and the differences between that was eaten by the Rich and the Poor !  We also learned about what the differences in clothing were. Also what people did for work. The children got to see what it was like for others in another culture then our own. Yet it was a culture that some of our family heritage came from.

Each book gives a rich history as well as people who influenced that era and told about them. The illustrations are very colorful and hold your attention as you look at each to see what is included in them. They are simple yet beautiful. Each book also includes a very nice sized glossary in them, one that could be used for Spelling and Vocabulary lessons if one wished to.  We personally loved Carole’s books and I feel as a homeschooling mom that they really enriched our studies by giving us more understanding of our heritage and the lives of others. They are a fun and exciting way to add value to your studying or just reading for fun ! I like the way Carole writes so that the content covered is presented in a easy way for children to understand the historical era being talked about in her books.  Although my teen girls thought Colonial America was a bit on the little kids picture wise, I still feel it portrayed the content desired being taught. My Ten year old son thought they were great and as you can see in the video he enjoyed reading them to me and hearing them read to him.  I hope you will consider giving these books we read and other books Carole has written a place in the lives of your children.

Former soldier Thomas Baker knows he’s in trouble when he finds himself jailed because he couldn’t pay a few fines. Laurel’s offer might be his only ticket out. Though she’s everything he ever dreamed of in a woman—sweet and tender-hearted, yet strong—he’s determined to remain detached, work hard on her behalf, and count the days until he’s free again.

About the Author

shelley-shepard-gray

I grew up in Houston, Texas, went to Colorado for college, and after living in Arizona, Dallas, and Denver, we moved to southern Ohio about ten years ago.

I’ve always thought of myself as a very hard worker, but not ‘great’ at anything. I’ve obtained a bachelor’s and master’s degree…but I never was a gifted student. I took years of ballet and dance, but I never was anywhere near the star of any recital. I love to cook, but I’m certainly not close to being gourmet…and finally I love to write books, but I’ve certainly read far better authors.

Maybe you are a little bit like me. I’ve been married for almost twenty years and have raised two kids. I try to exercise but really should put on my tennis shoes a whole lot more. I’m not a great housekeeper, I hate to drive in the snow, and I don’t think I’ve ever won a Monopoly game. However, I am the best wife and mother I know how to be.

Isn’t it wonderful to know that in God’s eyes that is okay? That from His point of view, we are all exceptional? I treasure that knowledge and am always so thankful for my faith. His faith in me makes me stand a little straighter, smile a little bit more, and be so very grateful for every gift He’s given me.

I started writing about the Amish because their way of life appealed to me. I wanted to write stories about regular. likable people in extraordinary situations-and who just happened to be Amish.

Getting the opportunity to write Inspirational novels is truly gratifying. With every book, I feel my faith grows stronger. And that makes me feel very special indeed.

My Review

Although I did not read the first book in this series, I did not feel like I missed anything.  I will of course go back and read the first book, just to gain some more history and understanding of the time and happenings. It is like meeting new friends and really until you get to know their history, you cannot always relate to why they do the things they do or think the way they think….

What an adventurous and sweet story ! Historical Fiction is one of my first loves in reading. I absolutely love Civil War Era stories. I think it is amazing when two people are put together in life not knowing that they could be exactly what each other needs. Laurel needs help on her ranch for sure after losing all her family. Will she find that help ?  Will the man she chooses to help, help her ? Triumph through adversity in life makes for a real touching story.

Thomas seems like he is just counting his days till he is free, but I got the feeling while reading that God had other plans for both of them. Will he see that Laurel is everything he needs in life and in a woman ? He sure is a romantic at heart.  He is also a hard worker. He has been through a lot and really needs someone to help him go on in life in faith and love. Will Laurel be that woman ?

If you love history and a sweet romance with some trials in life thrown in, you will love this book.  I can’t wait to see what comes next in the lives of Laurel and Thomas !

I really love the way this story is so full of detail and it made me feel like I was right there on the ranch, living the story. Almost as if I was Laurel !

My Review

Being a Mamma to a son who is Type 1 diabetic , this series by Vannetta really hits close to home for me… I think for years it has always been my biggest fear , that if SHTF so to say there would be no insulin for my son. Thank the Lord he is 27 and a wonderful husband and father of 2 sons and soon to be another blessing !

When I first heard of Vannetta’s New Series, I was at first surprized as it didn’t seem like her normal type of books. I had grown use to her Amish Fiction !  Well when she said it was a story about a Mother with a Son who was Type 1 Diabetic, well I had to grab a copy of Deep Shadows to read.  Having a son who is type 1 and always wondering what we would do made this book come alive to me.  I can say  that dystopian stories have not been my genre of choice, but I had read a few books by another christian author that also were and so I thought well this one really hits close to home, so I read it!  I remember saying that there needed to be a sequel.

So here I am looking for books to add to my blog for review and There it is !!! The 2nd book in the series !  Yay !!! I was thrilled.

So, How does Shelby get through the hard times ?  Like me she is consumed with trying to be there for her son Carter !  I love a story of a mothers love for her child or children, it just warms my heart, but the suspense keeps me turning the page and I love how  Vannetta brings me right into the story and makes you feel as if you are right there in the heat of it all !

I can say that my heart has been feeling all the drama of this series and if you have a child who is diabetic you will surely feel the intense moments of motherhood on a mission.  Does Shelby find the needed supplies ?  Does real love find it’s way into her life and heart amidst these terribly hard times ?  ( No spoilers here )  The story has held my interest and it has been hard to put it down at times , it has kept me awake at night…lol  The suspense  has been tense and I love a great story that keeps me on my toes and this did it.

If you like Suspense, Danger, Mystery if you will…

You will Love this Story !

Yes Vannetta has again written and awesome tale, you won’t be disappointed !

The Alliance by Jolina Petersheim

978-1-4964-0221-9

When Leora Ebersole sees the small plane crash in her Old Order Mennonite community, she has no idea it’s a foreshadowing of things to come. When the young pilot, Moses Hughes, regains consciousness, they realize his instruments were destroyed by the same power outage that killed the electricity at the community store, where Englischers are stranded with dead cell phones and cars that won’t start.

Moses offers a sobering theory, but no one can know how drastically life is about to change. With the only self-sustaining food supply in the region, the Pacifist community is forced to forge an alliance with the handful of stranded Englischers in an effort to protect not only the food but their very lives.

In the weeks that follow, Leora, Moses, and the community will be tested as never before, requiring them to make decisions they never thought possible. Whom will they help and whom will they turn away? When the community receives news of a new threat, everyone must decide how far they’re willing to go to protect their beliefs and way of life.

About the Author

Jolina Petersheim

Author of The Outcast, The Midwife and The Alliance.

Jolina is a devoted wife to Randy and a gentle mamma to her two girls (Miss A and Miss M).  I have loved my friendship with her for the last few years watching her girls grow up (hearing each sweet story , laughed and cried along with her).  I can say that I cried with her as she dealt with and over came her dear husbands brain tumor and that with the help of the Lord she persevered !  I have so enjoyed her travels from TN to WI and Back !!!  She is “Real” as her stories are also real and full of what makes a story great ! ” Love”   Even when she doesn’t think she is , she is brave and so much stronger then she gives herself credit for… but I think that is so of each of us as we strive to live for the Lord and walk by faith and not by sight. She is a newer Author,  but he writes amazing books with a style and grace all her own.

My Review

When I first sat down to read The Alliance, I was not sure what I would find.  I have read Amish Fiction for over 20 years, from well known authors. But Jolina’s books never disappoint me.  This story was full of caring and not just for those within the community but also for those usually on the outside.  Jolina has shown each of us in this story how both sides can work together for the betterment of the other and do so with love and grace.

Having lives in a community of Old Order Mennonite’s myself just last summer and around them since 2008, There are times you feel like your on the outside looking in and sometime for brief moments are allowed to be inside and know the real heartache that is there as well as the happiness .  Plain folks can be slow to accept change, cautious  when dealing with outsiders or Englishers as they are called.

Jolina’s ability to convey their life and living draws you into the story line and makes you feel as if your right there living within the world she is writing about and I really enjoy that about her story.  It made me know that no matter what happened in the future that in deed we can walk , live and love in peace , even in two cultures that are so different.

If you enjoy a hint of mystery, suspense, stories of the plain folks, you will enjoy this story and  I hope you will get a copy and come to the same understanding I did !  That it is not alll about being plain… it is all about loving your neighbor as yourself !
